How To Calculate Time And A Half
To calculate time and a half, multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5. Then multiply that rate by the hours paid at time and a half.
- Enter your regular hourly rate, for example 20.
- Enter the hours paid at the premium rate, for example 6.
- Choose the multiplier: 1.5 for time and a half, 2 for double time or 2.5 for double time and a half.
- Add your regular hours if you want your total gross pay for the period.
- Read the premium hourly rate, the premium pay and the total, all before taxes.
For example, $20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour, and 6 hours at $30 is $180. Add 40 regular hours at $20, which is $800, for $980 in total.
What Is Time And A Half
Time and a half is pay at one and one-half times your regular hourly rate. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered non-exempt employees must receive at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek.
How much more do you get paid for time and a half? Half again your regular rate for each premium hour: on $18 an hour, every time and a half hour pays $9 more, or $27 in total.
How To Calculate Time And A Half Pay
Time and a half pay = regular rate × 1.5 × premium hours. What is time and a half pay for 10 hours at $16 an hour? $16 × 1.5 = $24, and $24 × 10 = $240 before taxes.
How To Calculate Time And A Half On A Salary
For a non-exempt salaried employee, first turn the salary into an hourly regular rate: divide the weekly salary by the hours it is meant to cover. Then multiply that rate by 1.5 for each overtime hour.
For example, a $960 weekly salary for a 40-hour week is a $24 regular rate, so time and a half is $36 an hour. Exempt salaried employees are not owed overtime under federal law, and the job title alone does not make someone exempt.
How To Calculate Time And A Half For Overtime
Federal overtime is counted by the workweek, a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours. Count all hours worked in that week, subtract 40, and pay the rest at 1.5 × the regular rate.
For example, 46 hours at $15 an hour is 40 × $15 = $600 plus 6 × $22.50 = $135, for $735 before taxes. Some states also require daily overtime; use the overtime calculator for a full week.
How To Calculate Time And A Half For Holiday
The federal Fair Labor Standards Act does not require extra pay for working on holidays or weekends, unless those hours are overtime. Holiday premium pay is a matter of agreement between you and your employer, so check your handbook or contract.
If your employer pays time and a half for holiday hours, the math is the same: hourly rate × 1.5 × holiday hours. Eight holiday hours at $20 an hour paid at time and a half is $240.
Double Time And A Half
Double time and a half is 2.5 × your regular rate, and double time is 2 × your regular rate. Federal law does not require either; they come from employer policy, union contracts or, for double time, some state rules such as California's for hours over 12 in a workday. At $20 an hour, double time is $40 an hour and double time and a half is $50 an hour.
