How To Calculate Overtime
To calculate overtime, count the hours you worked in the workweek, subtract 40, and multiply the extra hours by 1.5 times your regular rate. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered non-exempt employees must get at least that for hours over 40 in a workweek.
- Enter your regular hourly rate, or convert a salary to an hourly rate first.
- Enter the total hours you worked in the workweek.
- Keep the threshold at 40 hours unless your state or contract uses a different rule.
- Keep the multiplier at 1.5, or change it if your employer pays more.
- Add any double-time hours, then read your regular pay, overtime pay and total.
This is how to calculate overtime after 40 hours: 48 hours at $20 an hour is 40 × $20 = $800 plus 8 × $30 = $240, for $1,040 before taxes. The calculator above does the same math for any rate and number of hours.
How To Calculate Overtime Pay
Overtime pay = overtime hours × regular rate × 1.5. Total weekly pay is regular pay for the first 40 hours plus that overtime pay.
Is overtime time and a half? Federal law sets time and a half as the minimum for hours over 40 in a workweek. Employers may pay more, and some states add daily overtime or double time.
How To Calculate Overtime Rate Per Hour
Your overtime rate per hour is your regular rate × 1.5. At $18 an hour, the overtime rate is $27; at $24 an hour, it is $36.
Under federal rules, the regular rate is your total pay for the workweek, minus certain excluded payments, divided by the hours you actually worked. Non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials count toward it, which can raise your overtime rate.
How To Calculate Overtime Hours
Overtime hours are the hours you work in a workweek beyond 40. Federal law treats each workweek on its own, so hours cannot be averaged over two or more weeks. For the same reason there is no overtime calculator bi weekly setting here: if you work 30 hours one week and 50 the next, the second week has 10 overtime hours even though the two weeks total 80.
How To Calculate Overtime For Salary Employees
Many salaried employees are exempt from overtime, but not all. Exemption depends on meeting federal salary and duties tests, not on a job title, and a non-exempt salaried employee must be paid overtime.
For a non-exempt salary covering a fixed 40-hour week, divide the weekly salary by 40 for the regular rate, then pay hours over 40 at 1.5 × that rate. Used this way, the tool becomes a salary overtime calculator: a $1,200 weekly salary is a $30 rate, so 5 overtime hours pay $225.
Overtime And Double Time
Federal law does not require double time. Some employers and union contracts pay it, and some states require it; in California, for example, most employees must be paid double time for hours over 12 in a workday.
To use this as an overtime calculator with double time, enter the double-time hours separately. For example, 4 hours at $20 an hour paid at double time is $160.
Overtime Rate Table
This table shows the overtime rate at time and a half and what common amounts of overtime add up to. Weekly pay at 45 hours is 40 regular hours plus 5 overtime hours, and at 50 hours it is 40 regular hours plus 10 overtime hours.

Overtime Calculator Questions
These answers cover the most common overtime questions under federal rules. State law can give workers more, so check your state labor department as well.
How To Calculate Overtime Rate
Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5. For example, $22 × 1.5 = $33 an hour for each overtime hour.
How To Calculate 1.5 Times Overtime
Multiply your regular rate by 1.5, then by your overtime hours. At $16 an hour, 6 overtime hours pay $24 × 6 = $144.
How Do You Calculate 30 Minutes Overtime
Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours, so multiply your overtime rate by 0.5. At $20 an hour, the overtime rate is $30 and 30 minutes of overtime pays $15. Use the same method in any overtime calculator hours and minutes field: 15 minutes is 0.25 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.
Is Overtime Calculated By Day Or Week
Under federal law, by the workweek: hours over 40 in a fixed seven-day period. Some states also have daily overtime; in California, most employees earn time and a half after 8 hours in a workday.
How Many Overtime Hours Did I Work
Add up all the hours you worked in the workweek and subtract 40. If you worked 47 hours, you worked 7 overtime hours under federal rules.
How Much Overtime Pay Will I Get
Overtime hours × regular rate × 1.5, before taxes. For example, 7 overtime hours at $18 an hour pay 7 × $27 = $189.
How To Calculate Overtime Per Day
Federal law does not require daily overtime, but some states do. Where a daily rule applies, such as California's, multiply hours over 8 in a workday by 1.5 × your regular rate; 10 hours at $20 includes 2 daily overtime hours worth $60.
What Is Overtime Calculation
It is working out the extra pay owed for hours beyond the overtime threshold. Under federal law, that means hours over 40 in a workweek paid at no less than one and one-half times the regular rate.
