To get a government job, you find a federal job announcement, create a USAJOBS profile, submit a federal resume of no more than two pages, answer the agency's questionnaire and wait to be rated and referred. This guide walks through each step, from writing the resume to veteran, military spouse and student hiring paths.

What Is A Federal Job

A federal job is a civilian position with a U.S. government agency, such as a department, bureau or military installation. Agencies post these openings on USAJOBS, the federal government's official employment site, and each posting is called a job announcement.

Government Job Examples

Federal agencies hire for many occupations, each with its own qualification standard from OPM. A few examples show the range.

  • Police officers and firefighters
  • Contract specialists who manage government purchasing
  • Information technology specialists
  • Immigration services officers
  • Nurses, engineers and accountants
  • Maintenance workers, including seasonal roles

Federal Jobs Vs Private Sector

The biggest differences are in how you apply, not in the work itself. Federal hiring follows set rules for resumes, assessments and veterans' preference, while private employers set their own process.

How To Find Federal Government Jobs

Search federal job announcements by title, agency or location, then check who each job is open to before you apply. You can search federal jobs on our site, where every posting from USAJOBS has its own detail page and a link to apply on USAJOBS.

Federal job postings appear here once the daily USAJOBS update has run.

Where Are Federal Government Jobs Posted

Federal civilian openings are posted on USAJOBS, the official employment site for the federal government. State and local governments run their own job portals, so look there for state, county and city jobs.

Federal Jobs Open To The Public

Jobs open to the public accept applications from U.S. citizens and nationals, and current federal employees may apply too, competing with everyone else. Look for the open to the public icon in the announcement's This job is open to section.

How To Apply For Federal Jobs

To apply, you create a USAJOBS profile, attach a resume, answer the agency's questions and submit through the agency's application system. Read the announcement's Requirements, Qualifications and How to Apply sections first so you know what to send.

  1. Create a Login.gov account and use it to sign in to USAJOBS.
  2. Complete your USAJOBS profile, which you need before you can apply.
  3. Upload a resume of no more than two pages, or build one with the USAJOBS resume builder.
  4. Preview the assessment questions and make sure your resume supports your answers.
  5. Select your resume and documents, review the package and continue to the agency's site.
  6. Certify that your application is true and complete, then finish any extra steps the agency asks for.

How To Apply For A Government Job Online

Every step happens online: you start on USAJOBS and finish in the hiring agency's system. After you submit, track progress in the Application section of your profile, where each job shows a status.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Government Job

Agencies do not review applications until the announcement closes, and OPM says you will generally hear from the agency about 15 to 30 days after closing. Interviews and checks add time. How long do federal job applications take overall? It depends on the agency and the job.

If the announcement has closed and you have heard nothing, contact the human resources office listed in it. Applicants who are not selected see their status change to hiring complete.

How To Write A Federal Resume

Write a federal resume by matching your experience to the qualifications in the announcement, with full details for each job. Keep it to two pages, put your most relevant and recent work first and use concise, results-focused language.

What Is A Federal Resume

A federal resume is the resume you submit for a federal job. It includes details a private employer may not ask for, such as start and end dates by month and year and hours worked per week, because HR uses them to credit your experience.

Federal Resume Format

OPM suggests 0.5-inch margins, 14-point type for headings and 10-point type for the main text, which answers the question of font size for federal resume layouts. USAJOBS recommends saving the resume as a PDF so the formatting and page count stay the same.

Federal Resume 2 Pages

Since September 27, 2025, resumes for most federal jobs may be no more than two pages, and USAJOBS will not let you upload or build a longer one. If an agency receives only a longer resume, that applicant is not considered further. So how many pages should a federal resume be? Two at most, unless the announcement says otherwise.

What Should A Federal Resume Include

  • Employer name and your job title for each position
  • Start and end dates by month and year
  • Hours worked per week
  • Duties and accomplishments that show how you meet the qualifications
  • Education, plus transcripts if the announcement asks for them
  • A veterans' preference claim, if you have one

Keywords For Federal Resume

Use the words from the announcement's qualifications and specialized experience sections wherever they truly describe your work. HR will not assume experience you do not describe.

How are federal resumes scored? The agency rates applicants using the resume, the questionnaire and any other assessments. Your resume must back up every questionnaire answer, or your rating can drop.

Federal Resume Example

A strong federal resume shows each job as a block with the details HR needs. The layout below shows what to write for one job entry.

Sample layout for one job entry
PartWhat to write
Job title and employerYour exact title and the organization's name and location
DatesMonth and year you started and ended, or present
Hours per weekYour usual weekly hours
DutiesThe work you did, using the announcement's wording where it fits
AccomplishmentsSpecific results, such as projects finished or processes improved

Federal Resume Template

The USAJOBS resume builder walks you through each section and keeps the required fields in place, which makes it a dependable resume template for federal government jobs. If you upload your own file instead, follow the layout above and save it as a PDF.

Federal Resume Vs Regular Resume

A regular resume can follow any format the employer accepts, while a federal resume adds dates, weekly hours and detailed duties for each job, within two pages. In any federal resume vs civilian resume comparison, remember that the federal version is read by HR specialists who check each qualification, so leave nothing for them to guess.

How To Get A Government Job With No Experience

Start with jobs at entry grades, where education can often stand in for experience, and with student and recent graduate programs. Unpaid and volunteer work counts the same as comparable paid work under OPM's qualification policies, so list it with dates and hours.

See our guide to entry level jobs with no experience for first-application tips. You can also browse entry level jobs outside government.

How To Get A Government Job Without A Degree

Most OPM qualification standards let you qualify through education, experience or a combination of the two. Check the Qualifications section of each announcement: if it asks for specialized experience and no degree, your work history can qualify you.

How To Get A Government Job Out Of College

The Pathways Programs include an Internship Program for students and a Recent Graduates Program that offers one to two years of development in an agency. Under OPM's Pathways rules, recent graduates generally apply within two years of finishing a degree or certificate, or up to six years for veterans who could not apply because of military service.

How To Get A Federal Job As A Veteran

Claim veterans' preference on your application or resume and upload proof: your DD-214 for 5-point preference, or the SF-15 and its supporting documents for 10-point preference. Veterans released under honorable conditions are generally eligible, in disabled, non-disabled and sole survivorship categories.

For a federal resume with military experience, translate military duties into the language of the announcement. List dates and weekly hours for each assignment, just as you would for a civilian job.

Federal Jobs For Military Spouses

The military spouse noncompetitive appointing authority lets agencies hire eligible spouses without the usual competitive process. It covers spouses of active duty service members, spouses of members with a 100 percent service-connected disability and unremarried widows or widowers of members killed on active duty.

Agencies choose whether to use it, and eligible spouses do not get priority over other qualified applicants. Look for the military spouses hiring path in each announcement.

Is It Hard To Get A Government Job

It is competitive and rule-driven, but the rules are published. So how hard is it to get a government job? It depends mostly on whether your resume clearly proves each qualification and supports your questionnaire answers.

Qualified applicants are placed into categories, and the agency sends the highest qualified applications to the hiring official. That official chooses whom to interview, by panel, video, phone or in person.

Highest Paying Government Job Categories

Federal pay is set by pay scale and grade, and every announcement shows its salary range. Higher grades require more specialized experience, so jobs at higher grades pay more and ask for more.

Federal Resume Tips: Common Questions

These tips for federal resume writing answer common questions about length, format and eligibility. Each answer follows OPM and USAJOBS guidance.

How Long Should A Federal Resume Be?

No more than two pages for most jobs posted on USAJOBS. A longer resume can make you ineligible, so check each announcement.

Can A Federal Resume Be 2 Pages?

Yes. Two pages is the maximum for most announcements, so use the space for your most relevant and recent experience.

How Far Back Should A Federal Resume Go?

There is no fixed number of years. Focus on relevant and recent experience, and leave out older jobs that do not relate to the position, except your current job.

Does A Federal Resume Need A Cover Letter?

A cover letter is usually optional unless the announcement's Required Documents section asks for one. Some agencies may not read extra documents, so put your key qualifications in the resume.

Can You Get A Government Job With No Experience?

Yes. At entry grades education can often substitute for experience, and the Pathways Programs are built for students and recent graduates.

Where To Apply For A Government Job?

Federal jobs are applied for on USAJOBS. Browse federal job openings on our site, where each job links to its USAJOBS application.

Can I Get A Government Job At 40?

Yes. There is no general age limit for federal government jobs, though some positions such as law enforcement, firefighting and air traffic control set a maximum entry age, which OPM says generally falls between 34 and 37.

Do Federal Jobs Drug Test?

Some do. Each announcement has a drug test field that tells you whether a test is required, and people who currently use illegal drugs are not suitable for federal employment.

Are Federal Jobs Only For US Citizens?

Mostly. Jobs open to the public are generally for U.S. citizens and nationals, though some agencies may hire non-citizens and say so in the announcement.
